According to Washington Monthly, a bimonthly nonprofit magazine founded in 1969, UC Davis ranks #10 in the best universities and colleges of 2018. They considered a total of 1,488 colleges and universities including public, private nonprofit, and for-profit colleges. The ranking is based on an institution’s success in the three following criteria:
- Social mobility: This portion considers 8-year graduation rate, predicted graduation rate, graduation gap for Pell Grant students, share of first-gen students and Pell Grant recipients, median earning of graduates, among others.
- Research: Total money spent on research, amount of awards for science and engineer doctorates, amount of alumni that receives doctorate degrees, etc.
- Public Service: Amount of alumni serving in Peace Corps, in ROTC programs, points for voting engagement measured by the All in Campus Democracy Challenge.
